PharmacologyMany times in working with patients, especially those with psychiatric conditions, insufficient attention is paid to sexual health and function. If a problem occurs, people tend to blame psychotropic medications right away, when many health conditions and medications can cause sexual dysfunction. This present flags providers to have the conversations with patients and broaden their index of suspicion.
Learning Objectives
-
Understand the Impact of Medications: Identify how common medications such as beta-blockers, antidepressants, and antipsychotics can influence sexual arousal and desire, recognizing the balance between therapeutic benefits and potential sexual side effects.
-
Explore the Factors Affecting Sexual Health: Examine various factors that can impede sexual function, including mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, physical health issues such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and the influence of drug use.
-
Discuss Gender-Specific Concerns: Differentiate between sexual health challenges faced by men and women, including erectile dysfunction and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), and explore gender-specific treatments.
-
Evaluate Medication Alternatives: Review the sexual side effect profiles of newer pharmacological treatments like Vilazodone (Viibryd) and Cariprazine (Vraylar) that might offer lower risk of sexual side effects.
-
Strategies for Managing Side Effects: Develop strategies for managing and mitigating sexual side effects when using psychotropic medications, including the use of workaround treatments like phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors for men and systemic testosterone for women.
Learning Outcome Evaluation: Participants will state one thing they learned from the program and how they will implement it into their practice.
